Developments in Relialytics condition monitoring analysis system have shown the ability to detect the effect of changes in one system on another through oil analysis alone which allows for proactive action rather than waiting for damage to occur.
Recent analysis of an engine sample showed increases in oil oxidation, nitration and an associated increase in Cu wear materials for a low number of machine operating hours (approx. 100 hours).
Review of standard plots for oxidation and nitration show a reduction in oxidation and nitration to levels below the engine’s normal operational levels. Laboratory analysis supports this observation that our system identified, however, the lab provided an “A” sample rating (i.e. no issues) suggesting no issues are present.
To the Relialytics condition monitoring system, however, a rate of change analysis showed rapid change in oxidation and nitration and suggested an overheating event and potential cooling system issues.
The associated increase in Cu wear materials provided additional evidence of the damage occurring resultant of overheating.
A week later coolant samples confirmed cooling system issues. The coolant contained significant amounts of non-magnetic sediment, was dark brown and opaque (suggesting the coolant had been “cooked”. The laboratory labelled this a “C” sample i.e. it had significant issues to be addressed as soon as possible.
The early detection of cooling system issues, through the engine oil sample, allowed these issues to be addressed before the coolant sample had been assessed by the laboratory. This early intervention more than likely averted more serious damage that would have manifested in reliability issues or failure later in the engine’s life.
